BREAKING NEWS :MOHAMED ALI LEAVES KTN FOR NTV

NTV, the broadcasting wing of the Nation Media Group, has poached Mohamed Ali from Kenya Television Network, Willice Raburu, Sylvia Chebet and Hussein Mohamed from Citizen TV, sources told the Jackal News, a clear indication that NTV Managing Editor Linus Kaikai is serious is putting together an award willing team.

Sources said that Ali will become investigative editor at the NTV, where he will join his former colleague John Allan Namu. “He tendered his notice this morning and will be starting at the NTV in August,” the source added. “They worked together with Allan Namu, so it would not be hard to re-establish the connection.”

"I will miss the entire staff members at the Standard Group. We are like family, but sometimes people make choices in life and this is my choice. I am always a call away, we can mingle any time," Ali told the Jackal News. "KTN was like my home, I was there for six years and I am greteful for what they have done for me."

He leaves behind the indefatigable Dennis Onsarigo, then man with whom they churned together a serious of hard-hitting scoops that rattled the powers-that-be, even endangering their lives. Onsarigo, himself a former NTV employee will now have to churn his stories. “He is a dogged worker and I am sure that he will deliver,” a source explained.

The problem is, if KTN do not treat Onsarigo well, he can as well decamp to Citizen TV, which is reportedly seeking his services. Another source explained that the exit of Ali has given Onsarigo a chance to breathe new life into KTN’s investigative desk.

Meanwhile, Chebet, Raburu and Mohamed refused to be lured by a new chopper that SK. Macharia bought for his news gathering team, and headed to NTV, which is struggling to remain relevant in the very competitive market, sources said. “This is a huge setback for Citizen TV that has been losing staff to other companies at a ground-breaking speed,” a source explained.

Is Prezzo’s time up in the Big Brother game?

The four BBA Housemates who escaped eviction this past weekend are back in the stress pool, barely a day after counting themselves lucky for still being in the game.
Prezzo smiled when Biggie called him out up for the eviction last night, alongside Lady May, Kyle and Goldie.
Prezzo got three votes; from Keagan (South Africa), Uganda’s Kyle and his own country man Alex.
Alex, whose brother Malonza was evicted over the weekend, said he nominated Prezzo because the musician is ‘selfish’. His choice over an apparent spat over cigarettes has sparked a mini backlash on twitter, where #KOT (Kenyans on twitter) accused Alex of being a traitor.
One twitterati Mary Wanyeri said: ‏”@MissWanyeri – So #Alex nominated #Prezzo today at #BBA, what happened to patriotism….the day #Alex is nominated you will for sure come home with #Zack”.
Prezzo was saved by Kenya and Tanzania last time, and the same countries are expected to stand by him in this second round. However, based on the votes this past weekend, Prezzo and Kyle are the weakest link.
Lady May and Goldie each had more than three countries behind them. The Namibian, who was saved by 5.5 countries, was nominated by the most housemates, getting 8 votes in total.
During the nominations, a lot of the housemates didn’t have nice things to say about each other.
Voting lines are open until Sunday, when the verdict will be announced. Malonza meanwhile, is expected back in Nairobi later this week

MCSK REVOLUTION BEGINS!

”Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending” Thats a quote i used on Monday the 18th when we held a strategizing meeting before the MCSK election on 20th June 2012. Congratulations Councillor Mongollo and Frasha for being elected into office. “With Great Power comes great Responsibility ” Here is the full Story of what transpired Wednesday the 20th by John Muchiri of The Nation Newspaper.
“Enough with the whining.” That seems to be what Kenyan artistes told themselves they decided to bring change to the Music Copyright Society of Kenya last week.
In an unprecedented move, close to 500 Kenyan musicians and interested parties stormed the budget committee and MCSK Foundation elections and voted in four of their own to head the two offices.
The MCSK Foundation will deal with social and cultural activities for its members.
These include medical cover, sponsorship, general allowances, among other things, explained MCSK chief executive Maurice Okoth.
For the budget committee, just like with the board of directors and management, there will be direct representation of musicians.
The committee creates the annual budget and also monitors expenditure.
MCSK administrators are still wondering what hit them. It all started with “Notice to members” adverts that ran in the dailies notifying members of the elections, which were held last Wednesday.
Artistes, who are members of the society, are hardly involved in the goings-on of MCSK.
Most just wait to get their royalties and then complain when they earn less than they expect.
But this year, on seeing the adverts, they began making calls to fellow members.
Reflecting the feelings of the industry, there was a huge turnout at KICC for a strategy meeting the Monday before elections were held.
Wednesday came and they were ready and speaking as one. Their revolution, if we can call it that, was about to happen at the Blue Springs Hotel.
The atmosphere became tense at the sight of the musicians — Nameless, Wyre, Wahu, Habida, Jaguar, Nonini, Mr Lenny, Ousman, Didge, Frasha, Bon’Eye, Gabu, MOG, Lady B, Mimmo, among others — with puzzled MCSK officials wondering what was going on.
They registered and gathered in the main hall where the meeting and elections were to be held.
Introductions aside, MCSK Nairobi region directors CDM Kiratu and Albert Gacheru acknowledged the presence of the “new” faces and all was cordial until the Nairobi organising committee chairman, veteran musician John Katana of Them Mushrooms, rose to speak.
“We are here to discuss the MCSK Foundation, the budget committee, general payment and the proposed amendments to the Memorandum of Articles,” Katana began. “There is nowhere in the advertised notice that says we are going to have elections today.”
The room erupted with a majority jumping to their feet to protest while others rushed on stage and grabbed the mic from Katana.
One member, comedian Mongolo, a nominated Nairobi councillor, was given a chance to speak.
“The next MCSK notice on the same page, published on June 8, 2012, in the local dailies also said that on July 5, 2012, there will be another meeting at Bomas of Kenya,” he read out. “The Bomas meeting, will confirm members of both budget and foundation committees, who will be elected on June 20, 2012, which is today. So I propose we hold elections today.”
His protest was met with cheers and chants and it took about one and a half hours before the two sides could agree on the way forward after advise from MCSK lawyer Richard Sereti.
Finally, it was decided that the elections would be held, since most members knew about it and some aspirants had already campaigned for seats in the committees.
There were six musicians running for seats. Two each were to be elected in budget committee and MCSK Foundation.
Those running for the budget committee posts were Francis Amisi (Frasha of P-Unit), singer Jane Nyambura and Njamba (James Wahome).
George Mwangangi (Mongolo), Wa Jane Mwalimu (Henry Njenga) and Mwangi Rurimi, were contesting for the MCSK Foundation seats.
It took about three hours before an elections team could be put together for voting to start. Police officers were brought into the venue to monitor the process.
Musicians who are also police officers, Alphamatone and Quachez, showed their police badges and joined their colleagues to oversee the polls.
After tallying, Mongolo and Wa Jane Mwalimu made it to the MCSK Foundation, while Frasha and Jane Nyambura made it to the budget committee.
This was indeed one of the biggest steps musicians have made to solve some of the chronic issues they have had with MCSK.
They got involved and voted for their own. Artistes have previously complained about mismanagement of funds at the society, yet they hardly show up for elections.
Big Ted, one of music industry’s top players, also lauded the musicians.
“This will not just impact MCSK but also government as far as music and arts are concerned,” he said. “We keep on complaining about how we are being oppressed yet we don’t do anything about it. Artistes made a very big step and I’m seeing change in the industry. Next step should be changing the board of directors and putting new faces.”
Maurice also looks at last Wednesday’s event as positive progress towards achieving accountability in the society.
“I’m encouraging members to get involved more, especially the new generation artistes,” he says.
Speaking to Buzz after being voted into the budget committee, Jane said that MCSK officials were puzzled by the large turnout and wanted to manipulate things.
“They knew very well elections were to happen today. Ballot boxes were ready in their offices as of yesterday,” said Jane.
So did MCSK know about the elections?
“The adverts clearly show that there would be elections today, only that they didn’t directly include that in the notice. I got to know about the elections last week at our board meetings, not earlier than that,” MCSK director Gacheru said. “I feel that those elections would have been done better if things were transparent from the beginning.”

MOMBASA'S MAMBA DISCO NOW A GOSPEL JOINT

The trendy Mamba Club in Mombasa will now be turned into a gospel entertainment joint. The club will be under the supervision of John William Kameta who runs a company at the Coast dealing with 'ideas resolution'. The lease is said to be three years and two months. Late last year, enraged Lingala sensation Fally Ipupa's fans turned the club into a dump site as they smashed and stole every item from the club including beers after he failed to perform.
The Mamba Village Centre comprises Mamba Disco night club and Croco Club. It's owned by Hezron Awiti Bolo who is the national chairman of Kenya International Freighter Warehousing Association. "I will revamp the entertainment joint and put modern classic music system. I want to promote underground gospel artistes countrywide including those from the Coastal region," Kameta said.
Word Is has learnt that the club will fully start its operations in March. Those already approached for the grand opening ceremony include Radio Jambo breakfast presenter and comedian Erick Omondi as emcee, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru of Jesus is Alive Ministries, who is also the assistant minister for Housing. On stage to thrill the gospel lovers will be Emmy Kosgei among other gospel artistes.

ETHIOPIA DIVAS

BONGO MOVIE DIVAS

Daddy Owen's "Mbona

Daddy Owen's "Mbona: ...Daddy Owen's "Mbona" get's ghafla rated
Daddy Owen's video just got dropped and i have the pleasure of reviewing it.
Well, for starters let me say that i am not a big fan of either gospel or ballads but when a song is good, it's good and this song fits the billing.
The song's content addresses physical disability (disability is not inability) and the video starts out with various individuals talking about their experiences with disability. I might add for effect that Daddy Owen is blind in one eye which is why i think he poured his soul out on this track. Nay, not in a sing songy manner but in his delivery: his vocals on this one are haunting!
Daddy Owen has enlisted the help of Denno on this track and an interesting piece of information is that Denno is blind. But right back to the topic at hand, the beat is reminiscent of reggea instrumentals which compliment Daddy Owen's husky voice ergo he's comfortable singing so right off the bat the track captivates you. But all this is before Denno begins singing the 2nd verse. I dare say he outshone Daddy Owen. Granted, singing isn't his (Daddy Owen's) strong suit but my oh my this lad Denno can sing!

Are Jimmy Gait& Holy Dave really gospel artists ?

Are Jimmy Gait& Holy Dave really gospel artists?!
Was having an intriguing discussion with a couple of prominent gospel artists today...
And an issue was raised by both in regards to how their music is received. According to Holy Dave and Jimmy Gait, there are some people who attack them for how they choose to put across their message. True to their word& right on cue, a question was asked via twitter that sought to clarify whether Jimmy's song featuring DK "Furi Furi" is indeed gospel. The question didn't seem to bother the two as they calmly cleared the air on the issue.
According to Holy Dave, the songs they put out are for a specific niche: the young, young-at-heart &teenie boppers. Ergo, they have to put the message across in such a way that their audience will receive them. Profound? Nay but for Jimmy Gait to proclaim that he has given his life to Christ "furi furi" is brave.
I consider the move brave because he boldly proclaims his stance and leaves nary a doubt in anyone's mind as to whom he considers to be his Lord. That clearly classifies him as gospel aye? But he is venturing into the world of the unsaved.
Holy Dave has adopted a similar approach to spreading the gospel. They have been really successful at doing that to the extent that hearing the song "Furi Furi" or "Ni Msoo" which features Holy Dave, "Exponential Potential" by Juliani or "Dakika Tatu" by Daddy Owen at a club, pub &/or jam session doesn't elicit any blank stares.
Why is it a problem when these lads go after their target audience? If anything, such courage is the reason gospel jams are now mainstream and accepted accross the board.
We need to stop creating mountains out of mole hills& accept the fact that these brave artists have charted the new frontier just as Jesus did. Let us stop rebuking them for exhibiting such bravery in their service to their God.
Afterall, it all boils down to the content of the music, not the music nor the hip factor of the videos& dance moves. Not that i'm a pro at quoting scriptures but didn't David dance as fervently for Yahweh?!
That is my humble opinion.JIMMY GAIT AND HOLY DAVE1
